Language is the expression of ideas by means of which special sounds are combined into words, which in tum are combined into sentences and the combination of sentences express ideas and thoughts of individuals. It is the set of human habits, the purpose of which is to give expressions to human thoughts and feelings to communicate with others. The human language is unique, species specific and innate. It is there in all human beings with a well formed brain. It is impossible to imagine life without a language either for contemplation or for communication. English has influenced in shaping the political, social, economic, intellectual and cultural life of India and is still serving as a dynamic instrument of social change. It is today one of the foremost international languages in the world. It provides easy access to the world literature, science and technology, radio and television and an ever-growing number of books, periodicals and newspapers. The present book tries to explain the nature, status, role of Language. It also discuss the four fold language skills with their aims and objectives. It proves English as a second language and global language. It also states the constitutional provisions envisaged in Indian Constitution. The book tries to describe the principles, problems and solutions of teaching and learning English. It also illustrates the skills, sub-skills, process and factors related to Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar with different kinds of activities for their proficiency.
