About this Item
A program issued by the American Slav Congress of Michigan, one of the most active chapters of the national All-Slav Congress (ASC). The ASC was founded in Detroit in 1942 in response to the appeal of the All-Slav Congress previously held in Moscow. The group was subjected to an intense Congressional investigation in the late 1940s culminating in the Report on the American Slav Congress and Associated Organizations, June 26, 1949, in which the group was characterized as a "Moscow-inspired and directed federation of Communist-dominated organizations seeking by methods of propaganda and pressure to subvert the 10,000,000 in this country of Slavic birth or descent" (p. 1). This designation was refuted by the Congress in an open letter to Attorney General Tom Clark issued in issue 4 of the group's magazine, The Slavic American. The Michigan chapter was one of the group's largest and most active chapters and Michigan Senator Stanley Nowak was its president. Included here is a program for the chapter's sixth annual convention held at the Hotel Tuller in Detroit on Sunday March 30th, 1947. It includes Henry Wallace's speech to President Truman on supporting the Greek people; a speech delivered by Daniel Trees, executive secretary of the ASC of Michigan; photographs of Slavic dancers; a centerfold program; a brief article on sending heifers to Europe, with many greetings and adverts concluding the booklet. Stapled wrappers (11" x 8 ½") offset printed in blue on coated stock (11" x 8 1/2"), [24] p., illus. Some rubbing to wrappers. Not found by us in OCLC. Seller Inventory # 11995
