Programming Industrial Control Systems Using Iec 1131-3

IEC 1131-3 is the international standard for the design of software for industrial control systems. It defines a set of related graphical and textual languages that bring significant benefits throughout the control system life-cycle - benefits for system integrators, control system engineers and end-users alike. This new edition has been revised and updated to include all IEC proposed amendments and corrections for the planned 1999 edition of IEC 1131-3, agreed by the IEC working group in spring 1998. Although primarily for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), IEC 1131-3 concepts will also influence the design of software for fieldbus devices.

Robert Lewis is the UK expert on two IEC working groups defining the PLC programming language standard (IEC 1131-3) and developing a new standard for specifying reusable software function blocks for distributed industrial and manufacturing systems (IEC 1499). He is a Fellow of the IET and has been concerned with the development of control systems for a wide range of industrial applications for over 15 years. One of his particular interests is the application of graphical programming techniques to the design of industrial control software.
