Progressive Drumming Essentials: Polyrhythms, Twisting Time, Rhythm Theory, and More

Progressive Drumming Essentials: Polyrhythms, Twisting Time, Rhythm Theory & More by drummer and educator Aaron Edgar is a drum instruction and sheet music book devoted to the rhythmic ideas that define progressive drumming. Drawing on material originally written for Modern Drummer magazine together with extensive additional content, it is intended for drummers interested in polyrhythms, double bass, odd time signatures, displacements, odd subdivisions, modulations, and rhythm theory.

The material gives focused attention to rhythmic subjects that can expand the vocabulary available for drumset practice, writing, and performance. An in-depth section examines polyrhythms and their applications to the drumset, while additional material addresses the relationship between shifting subdivisions, displaced ideas, changing rhythmic structures, and double bass playing. Rather than centering on a collection of songs, the book focuses on concepts and applications that drummers can incorporate into their own musical work.

Aaron Edgar brings experience from both performance and music education to the material. He is the drummer for the progressive metal band Third Ion, an instructor on Drumeo.com, and a columnist for Modern Drummer magazine. His work is particularly associated with explaining complex rhythmic concepts clearly, giving readers a structured resource for investigating the mechanics and musical possibilities of progressive rhythm.

For drumset practice, rhythm study, musical exploration, or gifting to a drummer with an interest in progressive music, Progressive Drumming Essentials brings a concentrated range of rhythmic topics into one focused resource. Its combination of Modern Drummer material and additional content makes it a useful reference for practicing and applying progressive rhythmic ideas in a musical context.
