Progressive Lessons Tending to Elucidate the Character of Trees, With the Process of Sketching, and Painting Them in Water Colours (Classic Reprint)

Master the look of trees in art with clear, time-tested study and painting steps.

This instructional book guides you through observing a tree’s character, sketching its outline, and rendering it in watercolor. Rich plates show individual trees in detail, from oaks and elms to willows and birches, with practical notes on color and form. The approach emphasizes keeping the pencil line visible and using color to enhance the character rather than hide it.

Readers learn to study each tree’s shape, foliage, and growth cues, then translate those traits into accurate, expressive drawings. Detailed platework demonstrates how to capture texture, light, and proportion, while discussions on tint tables help you mix greens, browns, and greys with confidence. The book also explains when to apply stronger tints or lighter washes to suit the scene.

• How to observe and define a tree’s distinctive character before drawing.
• Techniques for pencil sketching that stay true to the original subject.
• Guidance on color mixing and layering for watercolor landscapes.
• Practical notes tied to plate examples covering common trees and natural settings.

Ideal for artists, students, and nature lovers who want an organized, accessible method for depicting trees in watercolor.
