Progressive Parsing Book

Progressive Parsing Book by Allen Hayden Weld. Progressive Parsing Book is a nineteenth?century instructional text that guides students through the parsing of English sentences. It presents a structured program consisting of an initial analysis of sentences, a Rules of Syntax section, and chapters on Transposition and Figurative Language, followed by a large collection of Selections for parsing. The Preface explains that the Rules of Syntax are drawn from Weld’s Grammar and adapted to conform to the latest edition, with additional extracts to broaden variety and advance learners gradually. The book emphasizes analysis over mere parsing, teaching students to identify the subject, predicate, copula, attributes, and modifiers, as well as clauses and phrases, while illustrating these concepts with extensive model examples. It includes selections from canonical writers such as Spectator, Irving, Hamilton, and Longfellow to practice parsing, and it situates these exercises within a historically grounded framework of grammar pedagogy. The volume also outlines practical guidance on applying syntactic rules and transposition to poetry and prose in order to understand linguistic structure and improve linguistic fluency.
