This scale system coordinates basic concepts from the Scale System by Carl Flesch. In some aspects it goes beyond the scope of the Flesch system. One-octave scales are introduced in patterns with emphasis on half steps and finger retention. Also covers two- and three-octave scales, double-stops, and harmonics.
About the Author: John Bauer is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music from the University of South Carolina where he was professor of violin and viola, and Coordinator of String Studies. He attended the Yale School of Music, where he earned two degrees, and earned his doctorate from Florida State University. Dr. Bauer is former concertmaster for the Robert Shaw Chorale, and was a violinist with the Mantovani Orchestra. He has made solo appearances in 29 states and 15 countries, and also serves as conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. John co-founded the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra in 1963, where he served as Concertmaster for 17 years, Associate Conductor for 8 years, and Music Director for 2 years. He started the Columbia Youth Orchestras in 1964 and was the first director of the renowned USC String Project. In 1986 Bauer was named the South Carolina Professional of the Year in the Arts by the United States Youth Games, and in 1992 he was cited by President Bush's Points of Light Office. In 1996 the USC Athletic Department designated him as a Gamecock Faculty All-Star, named by student athletes as the professor most influential on his or her academic success. He retired from USC in 1998 to devote more time to concertizing, research, and publications.
