Project Design Reviews: A Mentor for Successful Design Reviews

Project Design Reviews mentors design teams through rigorous design thinking that will produce credible, valuable design products. In a world where design errors and rework cause excessive project costs or failed products, critical review cannot be overlooked. Thus, learning and practicing formal design reviews prepare graduating engineers and others for design success in the future.This book leads design teams through key steps in the design process and provides templates for documenting the process and intermediate design products. Design reviews are specified at three stages of design: problem scoping, concept generation, and solution realization. Design teams are mentored in planning the review, conducting the review, and determining outcomes of the review. Desigfn reviews may be conducted by experts or by peers. Using peer review provides learners dual opportunities: to be reviewed and to serve as reviewers, so they learn to think like designers and judges.In the end, this book prepares design teams to produce valuable design products, become experienced design reviewers, and be confident in their own design work. Your design is only as good as it can be defended, and design reviews produce defensible, well-documented designs.

Dr. Denny C. Davis is Emeritus Professor of Engineering Education at Washington State University. For over three decades he has been driven by a passion to prepare engineering students for success in the competitive workplace. Dr. Davis has collaborated with engineering and business faculty and engineering design educators across the US in efforts to improve design education and assessment of design learning. He has directed numerous National Science Foundation funded projects, introduced innovations into design classrooms, and produced graduates well-advanced as effective professionals in the engineering workforce. Dr. Davis is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for his design education scholarship and teaching effectiveness. He has received universitywide recognitions for faculty excellence in teaching and in advancing engineering education research and scholarship. He is a life member and Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education.
