The Promised Land (Paperback)

Paperback. Three countries, three ideologies, one life-and the cost of believing in each of them. This is the story of a life lived across three systems-Soviet, Israeli, and American-and of the illusions each one created.Growing up in the Soviet Union, Jeff Manevich witnessed a world of unofficial economies, political privilege, and quiet but pervasive discrimination. Emigration to Israel promised freedom, but brought its own disillusionments. In America, he reflects on both with the clarity of distance.Direct, uncompromising, and often unsettling, this memoir challenges accepted narratives and offers a rare insider's view of the forces that shaped the 20th century-and the personal cost of believing in them.
