"Dr. Alexander Stewart was a prince among expository preachers and the various chapters of this book originally took the form of addresses delivered in the course of his regular ministry. In their printed form they are models of their kind, skilfully re-worked by the author so that they afford as much pleasure and profit to the reader as they did to the original hearers. They are marked by a deep but unobtrusive scholarship, clear spiritual insight, a sure theological touch and a chaste literary elegance. Born in Glen Glass, Ross-shire, in 1870, Dr. Stewart was ordained in the Free Presbyterian Church, Oban, in 1898. After service in two further pastorates he became minister of St. Columba's Free Church, Edinburgh, in 1918 and remained in that charge until his death in 1937. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland in 1926 and in that same year the University of Glasgow conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Divinity. The present volume was first issued in 1925. Dr. Stewart's other publica-tions included Roman Dogma and Scripture Truth (1931) Jeremiah (1936) and Shoes for the Road (published posthumously).".…
