About this Item

Description:

San Francisco: The Rincon Publishing Company, 1912. First Edition. Quarto (31.7cm); 401pp+lxv (index). Photos, maps, and charts throughout. Red cloth boards with black lettering and San Francisco city seal. Boards bumped at top corners, with light fading to cloth along spine and some nudging / scuffing at spine ends. Small tear to lower edge of frontis fold-out, not touching the map. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Massive report in favor of the city of San Francisco's acquisition of Yosemite National Park's Hetch Hetchy valley for use as a municipal water source. A July 1912 article in Alameda County's The Washington Press writes: "All previous studies and reports are thrown aside by John R. Freeman of Providence, R.I., in his voluminous report filed with the advisory board of Army engineers Tuesday morning," adding that "All arguments against the acquisition by San Francisco of the Hetch-Hetchy water supply are answered by Consulting Engineer Freeman with facts and figures." The plan was heavily opposed by the Sierra Club and other environmental groups. Naturalist and Club president John Muir ended his book The Yosemite, also published in 1912, with a chapter on Hetch Hetchy Valley, with the book's closing line "Dam Hetch Hetchy! As well dam for water-tanks the people's cathedrals and churches, for no holier temple has ever been consecrated by the heart of man." [Rocq 9436]. Seller Inventory # 32401
