The composition focuses on the details at the top of the antae, (load-bearing pillars on either side of a doorway) of the Propylaea, the grand ceremonial entryway of the Acropolis. The design includes a smaller 3/4ths view in neutral tones, and a larger square view of the same section with rich red, blue, green, and gold coloring. This print appeared as plate XXIV (24) in the Enlarged Edition of "An investigation of the principles of Athenian architecture: or, the results of a survey conducted chiefly with reference to the optical refinements exhibited in the construction of the ancient buildings at Athens" by Penrose, published in 1888. This work is historically important in classical archaeology and architectural history because Penrose combined surveying with attention to the visual corrections used in ancient Athenian monuments.
