The Protestant Catechism: The Leading Errors Of The Church Of Rome Exposed And Refuted, In A Catechetical Form. William Marrable. This 19th-century Protestant tract presents a catechetical dialogue aimed at exposing what its author views as the leading errors of the Roman Catholic Church. Structured as questions and answers, it challenges the authority of apostolic tradition, asserts the primacy of Scripture as the rule of faith, and denies the infallibility of the Church, the supremacy of the pope, and the doctrine of transubstantiation. It critiques practices such as confession to priests, invocation of saints, praying in unknown tongues, use of images in worship, the denial of the cup to lay communicants, and the Mass as a sacrifice. The work argues that justification is by faith alone, rejects purgatory, extreme unction, and works of merit, and urges separation from Rome while affirming the authority of Scripture and the gospel. An appendix records the Pius IV Creed and notes on transubstantiation.
