Protestant Modernism in Holland (Paperback or Softback)

"Protestant Modernism in Holland" provides a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the theological shifts and intellectual developments within the Dutch religious landscape during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Written by Eldred C. Vanderlaan, this work explores the rise of the Modernist movement, which sought to reconcile traditional Christian doctrine with contemporary scientific and philosophical advancements.

The book meticulously traces the influence of prominent Dutch thinkers and the tensions that arose between liberal and orthodox factions within the Protestant tradition. Vanderlaan examines the cultural and academic environment that fostered this "new theology," detailing its impact on the Dutch Reformed Church and the broader societal implications of religious liberalism in the Netherlands. This text serves as a vital resource for students of church history, theology, and European intellectual history, offering deep insights into the challenges faced by faith in the age of reason and modernity. By documenting the evolution of Dutch Protestant thought, "Protestant Modernism in Holland" illuminates the historical roots of contemporary liberal theology and the enduring dialogue between tradition and progress.
