[Cambridge]: Printed by Roger Daniel and are to be sold by John Milleson, 1642. [ii], 45, [3] pp. Lacking first leaf, a blank; text complete. Quarto (6-3/4" x 5-1/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Light toning, leaves just starting to separate at head, slight creasing and folding to upper corners of first several leaves, trimming to top-edge affecting headline and page numbers in places without loss to legibility, brief underlining, marginal marks and annotations in a few places, ownership signature of Sir Philip Warwick and brief annotation attributing the work to title page. $350. * One of two editions from the same year for which priority has not been established. Commonly attributed to Henry Spelman (but also to his son John Spelman), this work discusses the distinct and superior nature of the Protestant church and advocates the infallibility of Scripture. Sir Henry was an eminent antiquarian, legal historian and member of Parliament. Our copy was owned by Sir Philip Warwick [1609-1683], an English writer, politician and committed Royalist. Warwick was close to Charles I and served as one of his secretaries during the first English Civil War. His loyalty was rewarded by Charles II with a knighthood. English Short-Title Catalogue R1499.
