Proverbs

Biblical wisdom as presented in the Old and New Testaments involves understanding and application of God’s will in all aspects of life. It’s not just about knowledge, but it is about discernment, righteousness, and acting in accordance with God’s ways. This wisdom is presented as a valuable treasure that far exceeds material wealth and is attainable through the fear of the Lord. It is also obtained through learning from God’s Word and seeking to live in harmony with His creation.

Wisdom is more than just intellectual understanding or knowledge. It is the ability to apply that knowledge effectively, to understand its implications, and make sound judgments. Its focus is on practical application and ethical considerations. Someone can have a vast amount of intellectual understanding but still lack wisdom in making decisions or navigating life’s complexities.

God is the ultimate source of all wisdom, and it is fully revealed in Jesus Christ. The Bible is a rich source of wisdom and guidance for all areas of life. Studying and applying God’s Word is essential for gaining biblical wisdom. Reflecting on life experiences and observing the world around us can be a valuable source of wisdom. Seeking advice from mature believers who fear the Lord and know His Word is also crucial. Discipline and correction, along with reflecting on our mistakes are important for growing in wisdom. If one lacks wisdom, let him or her ask of God who gives to all men freely without upbraiding.

The Book of Proverbs offers much wisdom that can help to increase the quality of our lives. It is advantageous and profitable to take them to heart, and as Wisdom that cries out in the Book, keep them close to you. Bind them around your neck. They will be your strength, comfort, and help in your time of adversity and need.

Proverbs may be simple sayings, but they can be profound in meaning and relevance. They are more than cute little clichés. They are the wisdom of God expressed to deal with everyday issues. They may be expressed in everyday language, but it is important to get down to the real underlying truth that can only come through spiritual revelation.

This book of Proverbs is not intended to do an in-depth, verse by verse, chapter by chapter study. We are taking specific themes that represent some of the issues of practical everyday living. There is a chapter on the ways of a sluggard or lazy person, God's blueprint for financial success, child training, friendships and other relationships, how to deal with fools, the marriage covenant and fidelity, longevity of life, positive and negative issues of the heart, honest and integrity, and humility and pride.
