The Provincial Letters Of Pascal

The Provincial Letters of Pascal is a collection of letters written by the French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal in the 17th century. The letters were written in defense of the Jansenist movement, a Catholic theological movement that emphasized the importance of grace and predestination. The letters were addressed to a fictional correspondent named Louis de Montalte, and were originally published in French in 1656 and 1657. The letters are known for their wit, humor, and sharp criticism of the Jesuits, a rival Catholic order. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including theology, ethics, politics, and philosophy. They are considered a masterpiece of French literature and a landmark in the history of French prose. This edition of the letters, translated into English by John De Soyres, includes all 18 letters and an introduction that provides historical and cultural context for the work. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) did more than any other American to impress upon late nineteenth- and twentieth century thought the idea that science and religion are enemies locked in combat on an almost military scale. In 1849, he entered Geneva College and later enrolled in Yale. After graduating, White joined the University of Michigan as a lecturer in history. He returned to New York and won election to the state senate. Finally, White went on to become the first president and cofounder of Cornell University. He also is the author of books, including Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason and a 1906 autobiography.
