About this Item

8°, modern plain wrappers. Caption title. Text in two columns. Lacks title page? Overall in good to very good condition. 68 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Pages 1-63 are the Proyecto, presented to the Chilean Congress and signed by the deputy from Concepción, Ricardo Claro. Pages 65-68 contain the essay "Matrimonio civil, solicitud de los disidentes de Llanquihue e Valdivia," with 49 names at the end (mostly German). The petitioners argue that making marriage of a non-Catholic to a Catholic require special permission negates the clause in the Chilean Constitution that guarantees equality for all citizens. They cite 3 cases in which the law has already interfered with marriages of German immigrants, and warn that this sort of legislation will discourage immigrants from Europe. In the aftermath of the failed German Revolution of 1848, many Germans emigrated to Chile, encouraged by the Chilean government that wanted to colonize the underpopulated areas of the south. By 1860 more than 3,000 Germans had settled in the Araucanía Region, the Los Ríos Region, and the Región de los Lagos, with concentrations in the Lake Llanquihue area and Puerto Montt. Many of these Germans were Roman Catholics, but some were Protestants.*** Briseño II, 255. Not located in CCPBE or Rebiun. Not located in Copac. Not located in Hollis, Orbis or Melvyl.
