My Psychic War with Uncle Sam

An intellectual coming of age, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam swings from life on the military base with G.I. Joes in starched fatigues to the streets of Seattle where Dennis and Marcel encounter the hippie culture seeking nirvana on hallucinogenic drugs. The reader is taken on an exhilarating romp through western thought and history as the ideological struggles that permeated the 60’s generation are juxtaposed with the uncertainties of modern day life. With heavy doses of mysticism, drama, and humor—just to keep things interesting—the authors ask, “Who is Uncle Sam?”

Dennis DeLuccio invites the reader into his underground garden to rethink politics, war, sex, drugs, philosophy, religion, the occult, the origin of the hippie movement, and the meaning of a psychic war. Dennis drifts back to 1968 and his first assignment at Fort Lewis, Washington. He remembers Marcel Dreyfus, a young soldier who has just returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. The many GI’s who say they don’t believe in the war, yet stand at attention, fall silent and follow orders even as they are shipped out to Nam, mystified Dennis. Marcel however cuts through the illusions of the so-called patriots with wit and rhetoric.

Packed with documented facts of U.S. foreign policy, paraphrased from the works of Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Bertrand Russell and others, as well as broadcast news reports of the period, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam infuses social comment with lived experience. Like Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, it fashions the account of a young army recruit living stateside through the Vietnam era into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. My Psychic War with Uncle Sam weaves historical fact and dramatic fiction into an essential storybook of our times that is both entertaining and enlightening.

“What a surprise! This is an exuberant romp through history, politics, and philosophy, through the eyes of a modern Alice in Wonderland. Escaping down a hole in his living room floor, Dennis seeks refuge from the horrors of 9-11 in his secret garden only to confront madness and paranoia, as he tends his garden and searches for an understanding of his experiences in the army during the Viet Nam era. The novel will keep you wondering what supposed masters of truth can be trusted to guide Dennis home in his psychic war with Uncle Sam?”

—Cynthia McKinney, U.S. Congresswoman and 2008 Green Party U.S. Presidential Nominee

“A dramatic account of one man’s psychic and political struggle against the cant and crimes of establishment institutions. Written with engaging candor and much human spirit.”

—Michael Parenti, author of Contrary Notions and God and His Demons
