The text is a highly analytical defense of psychical phenomena as a legitimate branch of academic science. Hans Driesch (1867—1941) was a highly eminent German experimental embryologist and philosopher. He achieved international scientific fame for establishing the neo-vitalist concept of "entelechy" (the theory that a non-spatial life-force directs biological development).Driesch approached parapsychology with strict scientific methodology, serving as a member of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) from 1913 and as its President from 1926 to 1927. Historically, 1933 was a pivotal year for Driesch: he published this book and also became the first non-Jewish academic stripped of his university chair (at Leipzig) by the Nazi regime due to his vocal pacifism."
