Public Addresses, Collegiate and Popular

"Public Addresses, Collegiate And Popular" by Daniel Denison Whedon. This volume collects a diverse set of orations delivered at the Wesleyan University and the University of Michigan in the 1830s–1860s, including inaugural addresses, baccalaureate sermons, and popular addresses. The collection surveys the value of classical studies, the aims of liberal education, and the formation of character through language, literature, history, and theology. It advocates the study of the original scriptures in Hebrew and Greek, the discipline of language, and the moral responsibilities of ministers, scholars, and citizens. It argues for utility balanced with refinement, the cultivation of conscience, and the integration of faith with public life. A prominent through-line is the cultivation of virtue, intellectual discipline, and civic enterprise as foundations of a robust republic. The volume stands as a key nineteenth-century American anthology for education, rhetoric, religion, and public duty.
