Public Faith : The State of Religious Belief and Practice in Britain

This book looks at the state of religious belief and practice in Britain today. What emerges is a picture of long-term decline in churchgoing, coupled with a powerful and resurgent spirituality.
In this volume experts in a variety of fields, from theology to psychology, sociology to statistics, ask whether it is possible to measure something as subjective as religious conviction by empirical methods. The different ways of measuring belief and practice are examined, and the authors outline what they believe to be the true state of religion in Britain. Finally, they aim to show how a more profound understanding of the nature of faith can enable the churches to engage effectively with the world and with contemporary spirituality.
