Public And Parlor Readings: Prose And Poetry For The Use Of Reading Clubs, And For Public And Social Entertainment. Humorous by Lewis Baxter Monroe. This volume collects humorous dialogues, prose pieces, and short dramas intended for reading clubs and social gatherings. It presents stage-like scenes and dialogues designed for performance or reading aloud, including dialogues such as A Genius For The Stage, The Little Women's Pickwick Club, Idle Hands, A Fashionable Call, A Footman Wanted, The Romance of the War, and many others. The collection blends quotations, parlor-friendly humor, and dramatic sketches drawn from Victorian-era literature, Shakespeare, Dickens, Hood, and other authors, repurposed for club reading, dramatic clubs, school entertainments, and home amusements. It emphasizes wit, character, and social satire, often parodying literary and theatrical conventions while remaining suitable for amateur performance. The work reflects 19th-century tastes for shared reading, theatrical amateurism, and humorous entertainment for public and private gatherings. With an accessible tone, the selections encourage participation and showcase character-based humor rather than long narratives. The volume serves as a resource for teachers, club leaders, and family entertainment, illustrating the era's appetite for public speaking, witty dialogue, and playful dramatic recreations.
