Reviews:
Grade 4-6-What at first glance seems to be yet another British import series on human anatomy, is in fact something quite different. Instead of merely presenting information on the structure and function of the body's various systems, Bryan branches out to include a wide range of related and peripheral topics, along with associated health problems currently being investigated. Of necessity, coverage is limited to a couple of paragraphs. For example, Movement begins with a description of the two types of muscles and how they function. Bones and muscles working together is exemplified by the inner ear. What follows is a discussion of walking, running, cramps, lifting, weightlessness, coordination, reflex movements, joint replacement, immobility, artificial limbs, anesthetics, pain, sports injuries, genetic engineering, body language, and physical fitness. Large, captioned, full-color photographs or drawings are used throughout the titles, taking up one half to three fourths of each page or spread. Texts are clearly written and informative, although the Briticisms are sometimes evident. Libraries needing books on how body systems interact will want to consider these broad overviews.
