This book is a study, reference, or reading copy only. The book has some shelfwear, edge wear, corner wear; some warping and wrinkling to the last 100 pages from water damage. Pages 497 through 512 have some soiling splatter (looks like coffee) and page 505 has a resultant small open tear in the middle of the page with a few words of missing text. The book is still useable but unattractive and priced accordingly. Inside pages have no writing. ; 5.9 X 1.2 X 8.8 inches; 564 pages.

Purpose, Pattern, and Process explores the processes writers engage in when they write. It focuses on how the purpose of the writing and the patterns of organization used to develop the content affect how those writing processes work. The organization and much of the content of this text is based on theories developed by James Kinneavy in A Theory of Discourse. This gives students a comprehensive theoretical framework that allows them to explore a variety of different kinds of writing in a systematic way and to make informed decisions about their own writing.
How Purpose, Pattern, and Process is organized:
- Introduction – defines the basic terminology used and shows how the three concepts are interconnected.
- Part I “Purpose” – covers four kinds of writing: expressive, literary, persuasive, and referential.
- Part II “Pattern” – covers the four basic patterns of organization: classification, description, narration, and evaluation.
- Part III “Process” – explains four necessary activities: getting ideas, creating details, focusing writing, and refining the language.
- Part IV “Additional Readings and Student Writing” – provides thirty selections that illustrate the principles discussed in the earlier parts of the book.
Purpose, Pattern, and Process includes ancillary materials available online:
- Content quizzes
- Additional materials for selected chapters
- Additional readings with discussion questions and writing assignments

Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on standard-sized books weighing up to 4 LB, or 1.8 KG. If your book order is heavy and/or over-sized and the shipping address is OUTSIDE of The United States, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
At Mahler Books, we make no attempt to over-charge for shipping. Sometimes International buyers are surprised to discover the high cost of shipping heavy or over-sized books.
If you are located OUTSIDE of The United States, and you are ordering a heavy or over-sized book, the shipping costs are estimated to be about 42 US dollars. This is the cost of the Global Priority Flat Rate Box. I agree that this shipping cost seems excessive, but this is what the Postal Service charges me, and this is the cheapest rate I have been able to locate for large books weighing over 1.8 KG.
