Pyramus And Thisbe: An Opera And Tragedy, In Two Acts, In Rhyme (1854)

Pyramus and Thisbe is a two-act opera and tragedy written in rhyme by Adam Chadwick in 1854. The story is based on the ancient Greek myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, which tells the tale of two young lovers who are forbidden to marry by their parents. They communicate secretly through a crack in the wall between their houses, but when they plan to elope, Thisbe is frightened away by a lion and Pyramus, thinking she is dead, takes his own life. Upon discovering Pyramus' body, Thisbe also takes her own life, and their blood stains a nearby mulberry tree. Chadwick's adaptation of the myth features musical numbers and dialogue written in rhyming verse. The opera explores themes of love, tragedy, and the consequences of parental interference in the lives of their children. The characters are portrayed with depth and emotion, and the story remains faithful to the original myth while incorporating Chadwick's own creative elements. Pyramus and Thisbe: An Opera and Tragedy, in Two Acts, in Rhyme is a timeless classic that has been enjoyed by audiences for over a century.
