The Quaker Peace Testimony in Ireland: Religion, Pacifism and Politics

The Religious Society of Friends have long been associated with the cause for peace. Across the world this small community has worked tirelessly in the interest of conflict resolution and no more so than in Ireland where peace has been especially elusive. As a branch of the Protestant faith it is impressive that Quakers have been so influential in the mediation process given the overtly religious dimension to that historical conflict. Charting the evolution of Quakerism in Ireland this book offers their unique 'peace principle' as the foundation for this success. Rather than become victims of the religious discord that Irish history has often witnessed, through pacifism Quakers were actually able to enhance their position and become one of that nation's most respected communities.
