About this Item
A scarce illustrated volume from the Homeland Handbooks series, concerning the combes and villages of the Quantock Hills. The third edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Illustrated with a frontispiece, 3 further plates, a folding map, and numerous in-text illustrations, including full-page illustrations. Collated, complete. Volume 35 of The Homeland Handbooks series, a sequence of guides providing interesting facts about different areas of Great Britain, for the traveller. This series was founded in 1897, and aimed to offer the history, topography, traditions, and literary associations of each area. This volume, focusing on the Quantock Hills, was written by Beatrix F. Cresswell. It contains chapters on Thomas Poole and his literary friends, and the history of buildings such as Stogursey Castle and Cleeve Abbey, as well as chapters by the Rev. C. H. Whistler and Philip Everard on stag-hunting and the people of the Quantocks. 22 pages of advertisements to the front and rear of the volume. In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Externally, fairly smart, with a little soiling to the wraps, losses to the head and tail of the spine, and couple of small labels to the front of the wraps. Internally, the binding is strained between page xvi and the title page; the other pages are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean except for the odd spot. Small closed tear to the folding map, not affecting the contents of the map. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 860M32
