Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science. Vol. Xii

Quarterly Journal Of Microscopical Science. Vol. XII by Joseph Frank Payne and E. Ray Lankester presents a dense, technique?driven snapshot of 1872 microscopy and histology. The issue compiles particulate studies and practical notes across micrography, histology, and comparative anatomy, including detailed observations on cochlear structure and the Organ of Corti, preparations of insect eyes, and the histological handling of tissues. It also surveys diatom taxonomy and related microscopic topics, alongside society proceedings, reviews, and institutional notes that frame the contemporary scientific milieu. Methodological guidance is prominent: tissue preparation, embedding, staining, and mounting techniques; fresh-state observations; and approaches to microphotography, sometimes using direct sunlight. The plates emphasize visual documentation of neural, skeletal, dental, and cellular features, underscoring early efforts to integrate microscopy into education and broad scientific debates. The collection situates 19th?century microscopical work within broader questions of embryology, lichenology, and zoological taxonomy, while offering practical demonstrations, apparatus considerations, and pedagogical strategies for teaching microscopy to students.
