Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science Volume 10

Quarterly Journal Of Microscopical Science — Edwin Lankester; E. Ray Lankester. This late-19th-century issue compiles short papers and notes on microscopic biology, physiology, and microscopy technique, highlighting debates on spontaneous generation, microbial development, and the origin of life, alongside methodological advances in microscopy. It surveys experimental discussions surrounding Pasteur, Bastian, and germ theory, and examines the relationships among molds, yeast, and bacteria. The digest includes capillary circulation studies in living tissue, connective tissue architecture, inflammation, and the development of new microscopy tools and illumination methods. It also presents embryology, cellular theory, and the structure of eggs and deutoplasm, as well as descriptions of new taxa from deep-sea and freshwater sources, and notes from scientific societies. Overall, the issue reflects a vibrant period when mechanistic biology and vitalist debates intersected with practical imaging techniques, taxonomy, and developmental biology.
