Otto Sverdrup describes voyage to the Canadian Artic in this attractive volume. Translated into French. Charles Rabot translates and abridges Otto Sverdrup's account of his Arctic expeditions in the Canadian Arctic. Published in French with numerous illustrations. Having joined Fridtjof Nansen's 1888 expedition across Greenland, Sverdrup advised Nansen when the 'Fram' was built and was later given command of the ship while Nansen attempted to reach the North Pole. The present work is primarily an account of his winters on the Fram around Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, where he continued to explore and map the area and discover islands to the west of Ellesmere Island, namely Axel Heiberg, Amund Ringnes and Ellef Ringnes, collectively known as the Sverdrup Islands. In adopting Inuit methods, Sverdrup and his crew were able to chart a total of 260,000 square kilometers - more than any other polar exploration In the publisher's original quarter calf binding over blue cloth boards. Externally, very smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the joints and the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light scattered foxing to the front of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 859N45
