(no date, ca 1918). 104 pages. Large oblong (31.5 cm. x 24.5 cm.). Brown-Grey card covers wrappers tied with ribbon with pasted-on photo of bridge and embossed brown lettering on front cover. Illustrated with b/w chart, maps, technical drawings and ca 70 full-page photographs "illustrating the construction of the super-structure of the Quebec Bridge". Foreword at front end-page. The Quebec bridge over the St-Lawrence River was first erected in 1900 and was nearly completed when it collapsed on August 29 1907, felling some 46 meters in the St. Lawrence River, causing the death of 70 workers, mainly Caughnawaga Indians; it was pointed that the Canadian engineers used 50% less steel than a similar bridge in Scotland; it was rebuild and then, on September 11 1916, a middle section felled in the St. Lawrence causing the death of 13 workers. The bridge was finally completed in September 1917. "To this day, the graduation rings of Canadian engineering students are made from steel from this bridge, no doubt to remind them of their sometimes awesome responsibilities" [Notes from a listing by bookseller Steven Temple]. Chips and tears to edges of cover (wrapper is 1.5 cm. larger than text). Else a bright and clean very informative booklet.
