This English version catalogue discusses the historical exhibition in the Reichstag building and gives a coherent, vivid, and multi-faceted picture of German history from 1800 to the present [1989]. It is full of pictures and illustrations and includes two very large fold-outs in a pocket. The German title is Fragen an die deutsche Geschichte .
Opened in 1971 and expanded in 1974, the historical exhibition in Berlin's Reichstag building reflects that period of German history when essential foundations were laid for Germany's current governmenal, social, and economic system and illustrates the forces, ideas, and decisions from which this system developed. The exhibition points out the far-reaching changes which were occurring throughout the world in which people lived at that time, and the political situations which decisively affected Germany's historical development during the 19th and 20th centuries are analyzed in detail. In keeping with its fundamental significance for the present time, the historical development of parliamentary democracy with its high and low points receives particular emphasis.
The steady stream of visitors and the brisk demand for the exhibition catalogue testify to a widesparead and lively interest in knowing more about this period of German history, understanding it better and, last but not least, in coming to grips with it. In response to advances in historical research and to current developments in government, the exhibition has been continually expanded and developed further, especially the section concerning the Federal Republic of Germany. ~ from the President of the German Bundestag (Lower House of German Parliament) in 1989
