A milestone in the history of quilting, this was the first quilt book, originally published in 1915. With wit and wisdom, it traces the origins of appliqu and quilting in the ancient world, in medieval Europe and in the pioneer days of America. Twenty-four of Marie Webster's own quilts are illustrated in color, with 60 additional black and white photos of historic quilts and needlework from the original edition, as well as photos from Marie Webster's family album.

About the Author

Born in northern Indiana in 1859, Marie Daugherty Webster married a banker, raised a son, and lived the normal life of a Victorian wife and mother until she made her first quilt just after the turn of the century. It was selected by the prestigious Ladies Home Journal to appear in one of their first color features, and Marie was invited to design more quilts for the magazine. As a reaction against the saturated colors and over-ornamentation of the late 19th century, Webster's quilts were delicate, graceful and charming, in pastel shades, with simple, natural appliqud flowers.

She soon started a pattern business in her home and Marie Webster patterns became world famous. Her intellectual curiosity led her to research the origins of quilting and appliqu, culminating with the publication in 1915 of the first book to focus entirely on the history and practice of quiltmaking. She continued to design quilts, to lecture and to judge quilt exhibits until she was 80 years old. She died in 1956 at the age of 97.

Her influence on later designers and authors has been enormous. In 1991, she was inducted into The Quilters Hall of Fame. Her legacy lives on, for her home in Marion, Indiana, has been named a National Historic Landmark and is being renovated to become the permanent home of The Quilters Hall of Fame.
