About the Author

Sanford Jacobs is a former Wall Street Journal senior staff writer. Several collections of his columns have been published as books. A graduate of the Wharton School, he ran his family's business in Kansas City, Missouri, sold life insurance, and managed commercial and residential real estate in Arizona, before starting his newspaper career. He and his wife live in Pennsylvania.

Paul Volcker worked as undersecretary in the Treasury Department, was president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank for four years, and preceded Alan Greenspan as the head of the Federal Reserve from 1979 through 1987.
