Black cloth with gilt-lettered spine, no major issues but c, 2 cm diam. disc of slight pigment loss to back, small white smudge bottom spine by back joint, otherwise clean and unworn, if just a tad dull. xiv + 580, 1 plate facing p.206, 101 text figs (I make it); severe tanning to outer sides of endpapers up to outer borders, edge-tanning throughout, a small stamp '3-Dec 1931' to bottom inner corner rear end-paper facing small gilt-on-black label of The Times Book Club, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked, top edge has ingrained dust darkening. Rutherford opens his Preface by apologising for issuing it so rapidly, explaining that so much new material has emerged since the 1904 1st edition that he could not issue a 'mere reprint' without relinquishing 'his purpose of presenting the subject as it stands at the present moment'. The Contents page notes that 7 chapters have Sections which have new matter or been re-written (and identifies these), while Chapters IX-XIV are 'Mostly rewritten'. It is thus almost as equally important as the landmark 1st edition and testimony to the rapidity of the development of the author's understanding and research over this time-period. xv cm x 25 cm.
