Reviews
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
A remarkable novel of the West by a young writer already mistress of her craft. Schofield brings to life southern Texas with its sights, sounds, scents, climate, and people. In 1884 Peter Jack Costello, after killing his father for the murder of his brother, flees Refugio County and is known as Peter Jackson, killer. In reality he is gentle and compassionate. Although chiefly about Jack's interior struggles to find himself and some degree of happiness, this novel has plenty of suspenseful action. The lacunae in the narrative are more eloquent than words. A haunting and beautiful story; highly recommended.
