Item description from seller

Coimbra; Nicolao Carvalho; In-8º of (8) 48 leaves; Bound Unpublished edition of this "Rule of the Glorious Patriarch St. Benedict". It constitutes one of the most significant milestones in the editorial and religious history of Portugal. The project was fully financed by the Congregation of St. Benedict of Portugal, and its re-edition and coordination were under the direct responsibility of the Reverend Father Friar Tomás do Socorro, who served as General of the Congregation in the kingdom. This volume represented the second printing of the rule in national territory, arising with the purpose of updating and replacing previous editorial efforts, such as the well-known version by Friar Plácido Villalobos dated 1586. The text meticulously regulates the daily life of the monks, covering everything from the distribution of food and the rigor of clothing to the criteria of authority and the process of electing the Abbot. Copy with recent cloth binding, interior with the first 10 pages excessively trimmed on the right margin, the rest with good margins. Illustrated with an engraving placed before the title page which we believe is not part of the work. Owner's signature on the title page.…
