He was remembered most for his service in the war as second-in-command for his brother-in-law John Hunt Morgan; Duke would later write popular accounts of Morgan's most famous raid in 1863, Morgan's Raid. He was also a historian and communicator of the Confederate experience and wrote a number of articles and books for publication. The noted Kentucky historian James A. Ramage said of Duke, "No Southerner was more dedicated to the Confederacy than General Basil W. Duke". REFERENCES: DORN II 2702; NEVINS I pg 83: Originally published as a series of newspaper articles, this exceptionally fine memoir of Confederate cavalry operations in the west is often consulted and widely quoted." EICHER #209: "This book supplies the loosely constructed but occasionally fascinating life story of the young Kentuckian who rode with John Hunt Morgan and became Morgan's brother-in-law during the war. Composed in a storylike fashion for a popular audience, it contains some suspicious tales and much about the grievous horror of war.Stories of guerrilla warfare, profanity, and solder life on the march and in camp add much to this narrative." In Tall Cotton #48: "A standard since its publication". Seller Inventory # 0224028
