No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 22.5 x 14.5 cm., 127 + 37 pp., 13 large folding maps, 10 in the first part and 3 in the second part all in excellent condition, disbound but essentially very good, Wheat says "Probably the earliest work of true scientific research to emerge from the Gold Rush. Its author was a gifted scientist whose pioneering effort was of considerable value" Howes says that "This report.gave Washington its first official information on the gold strike." But it is also significant for its role in the sectional crisis. Soon after Taylor's election "some southern Whigs began to realize that Taylor would probably not oppose the Wilmot Priviso," banning slavery from the Mexican cession. The key signal occurred when Taylor sent "King, a Georgian, to California, with instructions to encourage the organization of a government which would apply directly for statehood. If this took place, it would enable California to by-pass the territorial stage, during which southerners claimed a protected status for slavery, and to reach at once the stage at which slavery could be prohibited by state action." Tyson studied the geology and conditions for four months. The maps show the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Nevada. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 212. WHEAT GOLD REGIONS 179; HOWES T455, "aa"; KURUTZ 643b.
