J. Cruikshank, and folding chart of newspaper list to rear, all present, as called for. ***Very good in dark red leather-covered limp boards with gilt titles and rules to spine and gilt tiles and blind borders to front board. Attractive red and blue marbled front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Corner of boards slightly rubbed and bumped. No inscriptions. A couple of gatherings starting to loosen. No dustwrapper, as issued. 220mm x 144mm. **238 pages plus one folding tipped-in chart of the Chief London Morning Newspapers published in 1846 and 1946 respectively' to rear. ***'To mark the first hundred years in the life of a famous newspaper. The Daily News was founded by Charles Dickens on January 21st, 1846. The Century was reached with the 31,099th issue of the News Chronicle n January 21st, 1946.' (Quote from title-page). ***Then and Now By Way of Explanation. This book does not pretend to be the log of a newspaper's century-long voyage. Even less does it make pretense to be a full panorama of one hundred years in Britain's history. Both the log and the history are tasks that must await other hands. ***The more modest purpose of the book is to mark the century of the newspaper which Charles Dickens founded, by contrasting some aspect of his world of 1846 with our world of 1946. The Theme is simply Then And Now. Many of the chapters of the book start out form a year that was by every count a remarkable year.' (Quote from the fore by R. J. Cruikshank). Includes such episodes in English history as: trial trip on the underground railway, 1846, Charles Dickens, flight, the militant suffragettes and the laying of the Atlantic Cable, films, broadcasting, living to eat, the first horse trams in London, war correspondent, anesthetics etc. ***First impression of the privately-issued true first edition (preceding the trade edition published by Hamish Hamilton). Very hard to find. Of interest to collectors of Charles Dickens, R. J. Cruikshank, and historians interested in the history of The News Chronicle and The Daily News and English history from 1846-1946. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
