From the Foreword: The justification for my chosen title will, I venture to hope, be found in the pictures I have been able to make of this Country whose history for a period of less than four centuries is so crowded with events that it might well have covered three times the length of its measured years. The march of progress whereby its cities have been built up from virgin unreclaimed land to reach their maturity before the eyes of a single generation is in itself an epic theme impregnated with the spirit of romance; but much further away in anteriority than these few crowded years lies hidden the heart of Romantic America. To the popular idea, partly based on returned travellers' tales whose knowledge, maybe, is confined to a few of the big cities visited, America has no past, no antiquities, nothing but that which is utterly new; exemplified by a handful of assertive cities such as Chicago, Detroit, or, further towards the Pacific coast, Seattle. Most Europeans who ponder the subject at all, think of America in terms of the project-system: New York City for instance is synonymous with skyscrapers, Chicago and stockyards are indelibly associated, Texas and cowboys are condemned to perpetual affinity, and Salt Lake City means venerable bearded men with a multiplicity of wives. Americans themselves are somewhat to be blamed for this misinterpretation of their country's characteristics; unwittingly or with intent they have been at pains to conceal the beauty in infinite variety in which America abounds; they have kept back in the shadow of half-remembered things unparalleled possessions of age-old wonders such as no country on the globe can offer, set out in a land that is a world within a world, complete with every degree of climatic condition, every gift that nature in her most lavish mood is able to bestow. 304 pages.
