RTI in Action: Oral Language Activities for K 2 Classrooms, published by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), capitalizes on the power of collaboration between speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and teachers. Designed to enhance K 2 students oral language skills, the book offers practical activities based on general education curricular standards and provides specific, straightforward strategies to help SLPs and teachers modify instruction.

Organized by grades K, 1, and 2, and using RTI s three tiers of instruction, the book provides activities to build oral language skills in five major areas critical to success in language, literacy, academics, and social skills: basic concepts, vocabulary, listening and speaking, phonological awareness, and print knowledge.

Froma P. Roth, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research program is directed at specifying relationships between oral language, emergent literacy, and early literacy. She is also engaged in implementing an RTI model of tier-based instruction in preschool settings. She serves as ASHA s liaison to the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities. Her publications emphasize issues related to the assessment and treatment of language and literacy problems from preschool through adolescence. She is the co-author of a basic textbook on speech and language intervention, entitled Treatment Resource Manual for Speech-Language Pathology.

Dorothy P. Dougherty, MA, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who has worked with children and adults in school, clinic, and private practice settings for more than 30 years. Mrs. Dougherty has published more than 50 articles on speech and language development in magazines and newspapers both in the United States and internationally. She is the author of three other best-selling books to help parents enhance speech and language development of their children: How to Talk to Your Baby: A Guide to Maximizing Your Child s Language and Learning Skills (2001, Perigee Trade); Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child With Articulation Problems (2005, Harbinger Publications); and Talking on the Go: Everyday Activities to Enhance Speech and Language Development (2007, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association).

Diane R. Paul, PhD, CCC-SLP, is the Director of Clinical Issues in Speech-Language Pathology for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and an ASHA Fellow. Dr. Paul provides professional consultation for speech-language pathologists, tracks speech-language pathology trends, develops education programs and products, and assists with the development of speech-language pathology practice policy documents. Dr. Paul is co-author of Talking on the Go: Everyday Activities to Enhance Speech and Language Development and the DVD, Speech, Language, and Hearing Milestones: Birth to Age Five, both best-selling ASHA products.

Deborah Adamczyk, MA, CCC-SLP, has worked as a practitioner, administrator, state consultant, and state compliance monitor in the school setting. She was a member of ASHA s Legislative Council, a site visitor for the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, and a member of other ASHA committees and national boards before joining the ASHA staff as the Director of School Services. She received her undergraduate degree from Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania and her master's degree and supervisory certification from the University of Pittsburgh.
