FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. xiv+ [ii] + 576 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. Rough cut edges. Spine sunned and foxing largely confined to flyleaves, preliminaries and edges; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. An examination of Russian society, politics, social conditions and reform movements, 1854-1904, later republished as Russia Between Reform and Revolution. Bernard Pares (1867-1949) was an academic historian and diplomat who was seconded to the British embassy in St Petersburg during the First World War, later supporting the white army of Admiral Kolchak in Siberia. He became Professor of Russian at the University of Liverpool in 1908 and in 1919 joined the newly established School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London in 1919, later becoming director.
