Review
Authors Pat Day-Bivins and Philip Dale Smith have combined the Easter story and a fantasy about rabbits into a unique picture book they've called a Christian fable. The Rabbit and the Promise Sign has a relationship between Jesus and a rabbit. A star appears on the rabbit's forehead and places a star in the sky along with a bunny in the moon to be reminders of how Jesus is always near. This book has a story within the story. The "inner" story of Jesus and a long ago rabbit, The Promise Sign, is more compelling than the "outer" story about the birth of a special bunny who wears the Promise Sign. Why the authors didn't simply write the "inner" story is hard to guess. The outer story begins in a "telling" style, rather than the stronger "showing" method of writing. It also has an overuse of adverbs. The illustrations of anthropomorphic rabbits and scenery are original oil paintings created by Donna Brooks. Her paintings show the mixture of reality and fable in this story. The rabbits are appealing. Due to layout problems the text on some pages is difficult to read. An audio tape of co-author Philip Dale Smith reading the story is also available from the publisher. -- From Independent Publisher
