Racism and Education: Structures and Strategies (Published in association with The Open University)

To date, racism in British society has not been addressed by either the 1986 or the 1988 Education Act. Consequently, teachers and governors face the educational aspects of this dilemma with little or no guidance. Thus, in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum, they must blindly make various educational provisions: challenge racist beliefs, attitudes, and behavior; meet the educational needs of students; contribute actively to a policy of equal opportunities across an institution. Racism and Education analyzes the state′s role regarding racism in education and examines some possibilities for, and limits to, change through the education system. This enlightening volume illustrates how curriculam content, pedagogy, and institutional practice may serve to perpetuate or to challenge racism. A successful balance of significant recent articles and substantial contributions specifically written for this text, Racism and Education will be stimulating reading for teachers, students, and those interested in discrimination and antiracist policy. Although rooted in British soil, Western society also has weeds of racism in education.
