Junto con Miguel �ngel y Leonardo, Rafael (1483-1520) fue uno de los artistas m�s importantes del Alto Renacimiento italiano. En su breve vida realiz� alrededor de 100 pinturas y nueve ciclos de frescos en los que abord� una variedad de temas inigualable: desde sensuales bellezas femeninas, mitos antiguos y retratos hasta ciclos hist�ricos y escenas b�blicas. Tambi�n realiz� retablos y dise�� tapices para la Capilla Sixtina. Su Madonna Sixtina es una de las pinturas religiosas m�s reproducidas de todos los tiempos.

Rafael fue un aprendiz infatigable que no conceb�a la autocomplacencia ni se limitaba a repetir soluciones ya intentadas y comprobadas, sino que segu�a �nicamente el constante impulso hacia adelante de una imaginaci�n inagotable. Transform� su tema central, la experiencia visionaria de la gracia divina, en una realidad pict�rica visible. En especial su obra madura en Roma y sobre todo los frescos en el palacio Apost�lico del Vaticano le aseguraron un lugar en la historia del arte. Admirado ya en vida como el artista m�s moderno de su tiempo, la maestr�a de Rafael allanar�a el camino para el manierismo y la �poca barroca.

About the Author

Michael Rohlmann obtuvo su doctorado con una tesis sobre la importaci�n de pintura holandesa temprana a la Florencia del Primer Renacimiento. Consigui� la plaza de profesor universitario con una tesis sobre la decoraci�n pict�rica de la Capilla Sixtina. Ha escrito numerosas obras sobre la pintura italiana y francesa de la Edad Moderna. Ense�a Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Colonia y en la Universidad de Wuppertal.
