The work combines political economy with technical exposition, tracing the demand for coal, iron, and other minerals, the evolution of rail technology (wooden tramways, edge rails, flanges, adhesion of steam locomotives), and the engineering feats required to build embankments, tunnels, and long, level routes. It also offers a detailed account of early railway legislation, the geography of railway networks across Britain and the Atlantic world, and the social and commercial impact of rail transport on industry, commerce, and everyday life.
