Raising Ethical Children

Tells how to instill love in one's child, teach self-esteem, and find role models, and offers advice on understanding moral development

Reuben's 10 keys for raising ethical children follow his discussion of the Ten Commandments and echo many of the basic lessons taught there. If heeded, these lessons will help children grow up and learn to care for one another, their world, and themselves. Suggestions on controlling TV viewing, offering a moral model, acting with integrity, and much more are clearly spelled out and illuminated with examples. Reuben does not write as if these are easy tasks to accomplish, but his guidelines do make it seem possible. Denise Perry Donavin

Perhaps as never before, today's parents face the challenge of raising their children to become ethical, morally responsible adults. Reuben, a rabbi and author of Raising Jewish Children in a Contemporary World (Prima Pub., 1992), offers help through his "ten keys," which are designed to enhance ethical thinking and behavior in children as they pass through various stages of moral development. Concrete, practical advice and strategies are grounded in Carr's underlying thesis that parents must themselves serve as moral models. Because respect for the rights of others emanates from feelings of personal self-worth, methods for creating a positive and values-centered family environment are also stressed. This uplifting and accessible work, which effectively blends contemporary scholarship and scriptural teachings, will make a unique addition to the parenting collections of public libraries.
