Rambles by Rivers: the Duddon, the Mole; the Adur, Arun & Wey; the Lea; the Dove

Rambles By Rivers: The Duddon, The Mole; The Adur, Arun & Wey; The Lea; The Dove by James Thorne. This travelogue guides readers through a sequence of English rivers with a blend of natural description, historical note, and literary allusion. From the Duddon’s rugged grandeur in the Lake District to the pastoral flow of the Mole in Surrey, the Adur–Arun–Wey corridor in Sussex, the Lea near London, and the Dove in the Peak District, Thorne combines practical itineraries with reflections on landscape, architecture, and local character. The work, illustrated with numerous wood-cuts from the drawings of the author, interlaces quotations from Wordsworth, Evelyn, Walton, and others with sketches of inns, churches, ruins, and rural life. It offers guidance for the pedestrian traveler and aims to awaken a reader’s appreciation of rural England in the mid-19th century, emphasizing slow exploration over speed and a responsive engagement with nature and heritage.
